Stem Cells Healed Knee Arthritis Fracture

The following is a Stem Cell case by Dr. Silberman at New Jersey Sports Medicine on a 71 year old with knee arthritis, pain, and a fracture on MRI with before and after stem cell injection MRI imaging showing resolution of bone marrow edema and fracture.

A 71 year old active male presented to New Jersey Sports Medicine with complaint of pain in his left knee for 2 years.  He had an MRI from another physician performed earlier that month.

MRI LEFT KNEE report by board certified radiologist from January 2019: “There is diffuse chondral thinning compatible with moderate arthrosis.  There is a focus of subchondral linear low signal along the far
medial weight-bearing femoral condyle with extensive surrounding osseous edema. This may reflect focal degenerative change versus early subchondral insufficiency fracture”. See images below.

BMA Stem Cell procedure on the arthritis knee was performed by Dr. Marc Silberman at New Jersey Sports Medicine in  February 2019.

One month post procedure with injection of stem cells from bone marrow aspirate the athlete reported that he no longer had any pain with stairs and reported stiffness was only temporary after prolong sitting, pain was no longer constant, there was no more night pain, and walking was better.

MRI LEFT knee 8/2019 reported by radiologist compared to prior imaging: “There is interval healing of the previously described subchondral insufficiency fracture with  near complete resolution of
osseous stress edema”.  See images below.

Extensive bone marrow edema (large white area seen anterior) in arthritic knee in femoral condyle with fracture line, linear low signal dark fracture seen prior to bone marrow stem cell injection.

Post stem cell injection into arthritis knee the bone marrow edema (white area in femoral condyle) is no longer seen, bone is all dark normal signal.

Extensive bone marrow edema (large white area seen anterior) in arthritis knee in femoral condyle with fracture line, linear low signal dark fracture seen prior to bone marrow stem cell injection.

Abnormal signal in same arthritis knee in femoral condyle on T1 imaging, where bone should be white you see a large focal abnormal low signal dark black abnormality
(arrow) seen in knee prior to bone marrow stem cell injection.

Post bone marrow stem cell injection the abnormal signal in same arthritis knee in femoral condyle on T1 imaging is no longer seen, bone is all white again in knee treated with bone marrow stem cell injection.
